Oh my goodness, LOVE (per usual). This line in particular grabbed me and won't let go: "You can pour yourself out and deliver beyond what was asked, and still find your worth tallied in likes, impressions, or some other metric designed to feel objective while stripping the human out of the work."
Have been thinking about this *so much* lately—and viewing work as transactional is one of the reframes that's helped me most in my career. Thank you so much for sharing!
A blend of nature & nurture, eh? I think it's hard to undo the patterns we learned throughout our 20s and 30s and reconcile the differences between what we *thought* work would provide vs what it *actually* provides. (Sounds like we're living a constant "Instagram vs. reality" meme. 😂) I don't have the answers... but you're not alone!
Oof, this hurt to read because I could have written it.
I poured so much of myself into work: not just the work itself, but the relationships, the structures, all of it. But because these companies cannot be trusted to hold up their end of the deal (hello! I’ve been laid off 3x now!), we have no choice but to view our work for them as transactional.
I’ve done a lot of unlearning this year, and it’s painful and ego-crushing, but my mental health is the best it’s been in a long, long time.
“We are a family” until certain targets are not met🫠 the worst thing an employee can do to herself/himself is tie a bad appraisal or (even more extreme) a layoff to their identity and capabilities. Many people are out here wearing their jobs as their identities, without realizing it.
Wow, this hit me with a 1- 2 punch of realness!
The overachievers are tiredddd
so so so tired

What is it about us millennials that we feel the need to give our whole selves to work and then hate ourselves for it?
