This is a very realistic take! I agree it can be super valuable to learn on your employers brand and build your own brand on it but one thing that I'd pose to you is that people are burnt out working for terrible employers and the rise of AI-inspired layoffs is crushing employee trust. A 9-5 is a great thing but you will get thrown under the bus in an instant if some CEO thinks they can increase profits by cutting your livelihood. Have you seen the airtable CEO's announcement about layoffs? That's bleak. People are tired of being treated as disposable. I fully support your point on building a brand around your job and getting a side hustle out of it but I don't blame people for being tired of the rat race
Totally hear you on this, and I fully understand people being tired of the corporate bullshit, especially when there's so much of it. I think companies have done plenty to lose their employees' trust, and we certainly don't owe them any loyalty. I think the point we're both circling around is that people should do what's best for them. My curiosity is more around how quickly people go from quitting their jobs to encouraging everyone else to do the same. I totally get the appeal of working for yourself, but is the grass always greener? I think there are realities to that side of things that people don't talk about nearly enough.
This hit. I, too, have contradictory thoughts about work, because unfortunately work HAS made me cry (multiple times!) in recent weeks. I’m an overthinker and I know I need to be delusionally optimistic to quit the 9-5 and make it work, and… I don’t have that kind of personality.
Also hi it’s me, one of your readers on substack! Please don’t make me subscribe to a LinkedIn newsletter 😂
LOVE this!
Love you for reading!
<3 I have been feeling this a lot, so glad I am not alone!

Aw this made me look forward to my first kid free trip with my partner (whenever that will be)!
Well said, Christina! 🙏🏼
